Japan has a well-established and active Maharashtrian community, anchored in Tokyo. The Tokyo Marathi Mandal (TMM) is a formally registered organisation with its own website, Facebook page, and Instagram presence. It brings together Marathi-speaking families across Japan for cultural events, Gudi Padwa celebrations, and community support.
Maharashtrian professionals in Japan work across technology, automotive (Toyota, Honda), pharmaceuticals, finance, and academia. Many families have been in Japan long enough to raise children who are fluent in Japanese and English but have had limited formal practice in Marathi.
Japan is one of the most linguistically immersive environments in the world. Children in Japanese schools spend their days entirely in Japanese. Outside school, English takes over. Marathi, even in households where both parents speak it, often becomes the language of home routines and video calls with India.
The result is a child who understands Marathi, feels Maharashtrian, but struggles to hold a conversation in the language. This is not unusual. It happens in every diaspora. What is unusual about Japan is that the cultural distance from Maharashtra is so large that the pull back toward Marathi can feel weaker without deliberate effort.
Our one-to-one online classes create that deliberate space. A weekly session with a patient native Marathi teacher, focused entirely on speaking, with no Devanagari script required and no grammar-first approach. Just the language, at the level your child is actually at.
Whether you are in central Tokyo, in Osaka, or in Nagoya near the automotive hub, our classes work equally well online. Japan Standard Time (JST) is 3.5 hours ahead of IST. Our 7 am to 9 pm IST class window corresponds to roughly 10:30 am to 12:30 am JST.
Most families in Japan use weekday evening slots between 7 pm and 10 pm JST, which map to convenient late-afternoon IST times. Weekend morning slots from around 9 am JST are also popular with younger children.
We are experienced at working with families across very different time zones and will always find a schedule that works.
The first session is always free. We would love to be a language resource for Maharashtrian families in Japan, and to support the work of the Tokyo Marathi Mandal community.

Subbarao GarlapatiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Speak Marathi is fantastic! They break down the language into bite sized lessons that are well designed - visually appealing and build up well. The program is very functionally oriented - the program is not oriented around having you be able to read Marathi textbooks and know advanced grammar patterns but rather to easily and fluently communicate with others. This is not only something that most people appreciate but also is the way that you see the most tangible results, which keeps your motivation very high throughout the process. I’ve been with Speak Marathi for over a year now and I’ve had two instructors, both of whom are very good. It’s rare to find online teachers that care and put the effort in the whole class. Mee Speak Marathi kadoon khup shik-loh aanee too khup shik-naar sooddha! P.S. A lot of my friends learning other Indian languages such as Telugu wish that there was a program like Speak Marathi for them! My one-on-one lessons with Akshata have been highly personalised and interactive, and I've enjoyed discussing the language with her – she's very passionate and always happy to answer my questions! Right from the start, Marathi is taught in a holistic way, focusing on common grammatical structures and patterns that characterise real spoken conversations. This provides a great foundation to build on as your vocabulary expands over time. It also allowed me to follow along with conversations when I visited India for the first time, even though it was quite early in my learning journey. Overall, Speak Marathi has deepened my understanding and appreciation of Marathi, helping me connect with my partner's family on a new level. It's also been lots of fun, which is a nice bonus! Payal was a great instructor, very patient and was always flexible in case we had plans and needed to switch the class timings. My daughter learnt the basics of reading writing pretty quickly. Would highly recommend Payal and Speak Marathi to anyone overseas and within India that wants to learn languages. Akshali GandhiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. So happy I came across Speak Marathi online! It’s difficult to find good resources for adult language learning and they take a structured approach, while still making it fun and enjoyable. Anolika was a great teacher and I’m grateful for her flexibility around my work hours. I hope to one day rejoin if they ever had US-time zone based tutors! Gemma SawarkarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Speak Marathi makes it so easy to learn! The method of teaching is so well planned that it allows you to understand sentence structures and start making them on your own in no time at all. Incredibly friendly teachers and staff and an overall positive experience at every class. Thank you Speak Marathi! Renzil DsilvaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My Wife and I are both from Maharashtra but have been living abroad for more than a 15 years. We miss our home and had to find ways to keep our children connected with our culture. We found that YouTube videos were helpful, but they didn't have the same impact on their speech as a teacher would. That's why we started taking regular lessons with Deepa from Speak Marathi. Deepa is an extremely patient, humble and knowledgeable teacher who plans her lessons in a very structured way. In just about a year, I can see how my children have grown to speak complete sentences in Marathi, tell me some folklore stories and even remind me about any festivals that were celebrated recently—all thanks to Deepa and her hard work! I strongly recommend giving Speak Marathi a try if you're looking for both fun language lessons and an introduction to Indian culture! Sonny MujumdarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wanted my daughter to learn my mother tongue…Marathi. I was lucky to find “Speak Marathi” Aditi and Deepa. Deepa is a very patient teacher and encourages my daughter to learn at her own pace. She gives homework which is a revision of all the work they have done together as well as exercises to be done before the next class. A very systematically designed curriculum! Aditi handles the backend processed abs ensures that billing is done on time, getting payments, scheduling classes, etc. I highly recommend this institute for learning the Marathi language…whether is you Or your kids. They’re the very best! Reach out to me if you need anything else. Thanks. Happy learning.
