Keeping the Sound of Home Alive in Berlin

Berlin is a vibrant, exciting city to build a life in - whether you’re navigating tech startups, research labs, or its creative arts scene. But even amid the bustling streets of Mitte or quiet afternoons in Prenzlauer Berg, home is a feeling you carry with you. For many Maharashtrian families here, whether your roots lie in Mumbai, Pune, or Nagpur, there’s a quiet longing to keep your native language thriving under your roof.

As children grow up surrounded by German and English, Marathi can easily slip into the background. You might worry about your German-born child missing out on the warmth of chatting effortlessly with their Aaji and Ajoba back home, or feel the pressure of preparing them for a smooth transition before a planned move back to India. We help bridge that gap — turning passive listening into active, confident speech so your children feel truly connected to their heritage, no matter how far from home they grow up.

Easing the Big Move: Smooth Transitions Back to India

Moving back to India is an exciting new chapter, but for a child who has grown up speaking German and English, the sudden shift to a Marathi-speaking environment can feel overwhelming. Even if they don’t attend a Marathi-medium school, everyday life - from making friends in the neighborhood to chatting with family - happens in Marathi.

Our focus is on gentle, real-life conversational practice. By helping your child become comfortable listening to and speaking Marathi before you move, we make the entire transition feel natural rather than stressful. And if Marathi is taught as a subject in their new school, having a strong spoken foundation makes learning to read, write, and keep up with classroom lessons infinitely easier.

The earlier you introduce consistent speaking practice, the more at home your child will feel the moment you land. Starting 6 to 12 months before your move gives your children a head start and be well prepared for live in India.

Honest answers about how our classes work, who they are for, and what to expect.

Yes. Speak Marathi offers online one-to-one Marathi classes for NRI children and families in Berlin and across Germany. Classes can be scheduled in CET between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM CET.

Yes. We work with NRI families in Germany preparing for a transition back to Maharashtra and focus on the spoken Marathi children need for school readiness and daily life. Starting classes 6 to 12 months before the move is the preferred by most families as this gives the children sufficient time to prepare for life in India.

Speak Marathi provides one on one online Marathi tutoring for children and adults in Berlin via video call. The first session is always a free demo. No prior Marathi knowledge required.

Yes. Our classes are also beneficial to professionals working and living in Germany who want to learn or maintain their Marathi. Whether it is to improve your own spoken Marathi or help your children learn, Speak Marathi is here to help. We focus heavily on conversation and encourage every student to speak during the classes so as to get the most out of the lessons. Scheduling is flexible and can be finalised with your tutor (7 AM and 7 PM CET).

Absolutely. We work with German-born children of Maharashtrian parents from the very beginning. We assess each child’s starting point during the free demo and tailor the classes accordingly.

Yes! Many of our adult learners are non-native speakers learning Marathi to communicate with their partner's family and in-laws. We use English-medium instruction, focus on practical everyday conversational patterns, and break down commonly used phrases so you can start speaking basic sentences from week one without feeling overwhelmed by complex formal grammar rules.

Not at all. Children's brains are exceptionally adapted to multilingualism, especially when languages are tied to clear social contexts (e.g., German for school, Marathi for home and family). Our classes are fun, activity-based, and bite-sized, ensuring learning Marathi feels like an engaging hobby rather than extra academic pressure.

You get to choose! Most of our foreign adults and young NRI children prefer to prioritise spoken conversational fluency using Romanized text (English letters). However, if you or your child want to learn reading and writing in Devanagari - especially for school readiness back in India - we can easily integrate reading and writing modules into your curriculum.

This is the most common challenge NRI parents face! Children often fall into "passive comprehension" because parents understand their English or German replies. In our one-on-one classes, the tutor creates a friendly, encouraging environment where the child is prompted to form active Marathi responses, bridging the gap between passive listening and active speaking confidence.

We understand that busy professionals and expat families travel frequently! Because our classes are one-on-one, your schedule is fully flexible. You can pause or reschedule classes with advance notice to your tutor, and resume seamlessly whenever you are back - or even tune in online while traveling.
